Introducing my piece “Anabiosis”, performed by the Bang On A Can Allstars at the Bang On A Can Marathon 06/23/14. Ashley Bathgate (cello), Robert Black (bass), Vicky Chow (piano), David Cossin (percussion) Mark Stewart (guitars) Ken Thomson (clarinets). The wood objects in the foreground are the instruments for Michael Gordon's piece “Timber” which was performed at the end of the night. It was nine hours of incredible music. Photo by Dustin Dis.
5/30/14 The Real Quiet trio of David Cossin (percussion) Felix Fan (cello) and Andy Russo (piano) (all Manoexia alumni!) performed at the Flux Quartet residency at The Stone, performing killer pieces by Paul Lansky and Phil Kline, concluding with David Lang's monumental Pierced, for which they were joined by the other members of Flux Quartet plus contrabass.
03/13/14 The Bang on a Can People’s Commissioning Fund concert at Merkin Hall premiered of new works by three commissioned composers. Alvin Lucier's wistful, delicate “Firewood” used a score based on the patterns left on bark by termites, while Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry's piece had the ensemble using the tempo of their own heartbeats by listening to themselves on stethoscopes as they played. Daniel Wohl's beautiful piece used prerecorded tracks and electronic keyboards, as well as the occasional vocal touch and treatments. All the works were performed by Bang on a Can All-Stars : Ashey Bathgate - cello, Robert Black - double bass, David Cossin - percussion, Vicki Chow - piano, Ken Thomson - sax and woodwinds, with Derek Johnson substituting for Mark Stewart on guitar. In addition they played Julia Wolfe’s intense “Lick” (1994), and David Lang’s sombre “death speaks” which featured guest vocalist Shara Worden. You can stream the whole concert here.
