Wishing you a Very Venture Halloween!
10/26/13 When in Asheville, North Carolina to play the Mountain Oasis Festival with Zola Jesus I was lucky enough to get a tour of the Moog factory. Thanks Jason!
Released this week by Believers Roast, The Exquisite Corpse Game is a unique musical collaboration based on the rules of the Exquisite Corpse, invented by the Surrealists : each artist was given only the last 20 seconds of the previous composition and had to continue by recording instrumental music in any way they saw fit. The album, conceived and curated by Kavus Torabi (Knifeworld/ Cardiacs/ Guapo) features a piece JG Thirlwell as well as contributions from Torabi, Khyam Allami, Karda Estra, British Theatre (Oceansize/ Biffy Clyro), Bob Drake (Thinking Plague/ 5uu’s/ The Science Group etc) Weasel Walter (The Flying Luttenbachers/ Behold The Arctopus/ Cellular Chaos etc) Dominique Leone, Appleblim, Katharine Blake (Mediaeval Baebes/ Miranda Sex Garden) Max Tundra, Mikrokosmos (Levitation/ Dark Star/ Cardiacs) and Craig Fortnam (North Sea Radio Orchestra/ Arch Garrison).
Taken individually, The Exquisite Corpse Game represents thirteen brand new, original compositions by thirteen innovative musical artists but taken as a whole the entire album has a kaleidoscopic, dream-like yet homogenous quality. Themes and ideas seem to repeat and reoccur throughout in a way that could not have been known to the contributors. There is an ebb and flow throughout that sounds both pre-conceived and deliberate.
Now it can be revealed : JG Thirlwell will be releasing two albums on the same day on Ectopic Ents in early October 2013. The long awaited Foetus album, SOAK, which is a companion to 2010’s acclaimed epic HIDE, will finally see the light of day. The 11 track album contains a ton of new material as well as the Foetus cover of “Warm Leatherette”, a remix of “Cosmetics” by Secret Chiefs 3 and more. It continues and expands on some of the themes explored in HIDE and features guest appearances opera singers Abby Fischer and Natalie Galpern. In addition, JG Thirlwell’s chamber soundtrack to the film “The Blue Eyes” will also be released. The original score was created for Eva Aridjis’ Mexican-lensed thriller, and is performed with an ensemble including violin, viola, cello, french horn, contrabass, tuba and bass trombone in addition to piano, percussion and electronics. Both albums will be exclusively available through the website www.foetus.org, and digitally soon thereafter. We will be taking orders around the middle of September. More info coming soon. freq_out is a sound installation comprised of 12 individual sound works each utilizing a specific frequency range, made on site, and amplified to act as a single, generative sound-space.
Each artist is assigned a frequency range with which to work. This process is carried out in situ, each using a workstation consisting of a mixing desk and PA system. All the resulting compositions are then amplified together in the space to create a sound installation or performance.
freq_out is curated by Carl Michael Von Hausswolf and the particpants are JG Thirlwell, Finnbogi Peterson, BJ Nilsen, Jana Winderen, Jacob Kirkegaard, Brandon LaBelle, Tommi Gronlund and Petteri Nisunen, Permagnus Lindborg, Maia Urstad, Mike Harding, Franz Pomassl, Kent Tankred and Christine Odlund.
This video was created by Finnbogi Peterson at freq_out 8 at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm in 2011. There are two freq_out’s in the planning stage for 2014.

8/6/13 Today I went skydiving, jumped out of a plane from 13,000 feet. It was a free fall for about 60 secs, at 120 miles per hour before the chute opened. Firstly it felt like being in a wind tunnel. the feeling of wind flying up at you, as opposed to the sense of falling, since by the time the chute was deployed we were still really high up. The rush was like the sensation of standing in a shower of ice cold water, but without the cold water…like a gasping, vivid intensity. I felt really in the moment but it was a moment unlike any I’d ever experienced so it was almost unreal. Once the chute opened, it was just suddenly calm and a beautiful ride down. One of the most intense, exhilerating experiences of my life.
